The Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies (PFCS), in cooperation with the Institute of Chemistry, held the 6th National Children’s On-the-Spot Poster Making Competition last February 20, 2016 at the Physical Sciences Building, UPLB. This annual nationwide activity was organized as part of the celebration of the Chemistry week (February 15-21, 2016).
Opening the competition, Guest Speaker Prof. Rodolfo S. Del Rosario shared his insights about the theme “Chemistry in the Life of a Nation.”
Janrian P. Par (Los Baños Integrated School), Mark Kevin S. Mendoza (Bay Central Elementary School) and Kristine B. Arellano (San Pablo City National High School) were declared as the local winners and qualified as finalists for the national award. The National winners will be announced during the 31st Philippine Chemistry Congress. The winning posters will also be exhibited during the Congress.
The contest highlighted children’s view of the role of Chemistry in human life. It also aimed to contribute a greater public interest in, and appreciation of, Chemistry, particularly among the youth.

The College of Arts and Sciences (Blue Champs), together with Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is set to host this year’s Palarong UPLB with the theme “Palakasan para sa Karangalan at Kahusayan” from March 15-18, 2016. Palarong UPLB is an annual University-wide sports competition spearheaded by the UPLB Sports and Recreation Committee in coordination with the Department of Human Kinetics and hosted by the different colleges. The affair is participated in by the faculty, staff and students of the University held every 1st quarter of the year with five (5) participating teams competing in 18 sporting events.
Among the competing teams are the Royal White from College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology and all units under Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension, the Green Hunters from College of Agriculture and all units under Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development, the Yellow Raptors from College of Forestry and Natural Resources, College of Human Ecology, College of Veterinary Medicine and all units under the Office of the Chancellor, and the Red Griffins from the College of Economics and Management, College of Development Communication, College of Public Affairs, School of Environmental Science and Management, the Graduate School staff and all units under Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Community Affairs.
In preparation for the 2016 Palarong UPLB , the CAS Sports & Fitness Committee has been holding several friendship games since November last year to secure a strong finish in this year’s competitions. CAS units and offices are invited to participate in all the activities.

The Institute of Chemistry (IC) held the IClympics 2016 last January 14 to 15 at the Lower Field and EB Copeland Gym, UPLB. IClympics, formerly named IC Sports Fest, is an annual sports event open to all faculty members, staff, students and alumni housed by the institute. It was organized by the IC Sports Committee with Korina Vida Sinad as the Head.
The participants were divided into two groups: the Blue Team and the Green Team. These teams competed in different matches in Badminton, Table Tennis, Volleyball and Basketball. The Blue Team emerged victorious in Badminton, Men’s and Mixed Table Tennis, Men’s Volleyball and Men’s Basketball, while the Green Team won in Mixed Volleyball, Women’s Table Tennis and Women’s Basketball.
IClympics aims to build sportsmanship and camaraderie, and promote health and wellness among the constituents of the institute.
