Students from the Institute of Chemistry (IC) clinched 2nd place in the annual PACSiklaban held on February 17, 2013 at the College of Social Welfare and Community Development in UP Diliman. Twelve schools participated in the national college chemistry quiz contest, where UP Diliman took the top spot and UP Manila landing on the 3rd place. The UPLB team was composed of Jessa Marie V. Makabenta (team captain), King Bryan C. Gabog, Christian C. Manahan, Rochelle P. Ibabao, Inah Marie C. Aquino, Anna Esperanza Q. Legaspi, and Penefrancia F. Monte. The team had been trained by IC instructors Carmelo E. Briones, Mary Rose Claire M. Galbo, Hervin Errol T. Mendoza, Gluztavelle Judeen S. Mercado, and Christina C. Uclaray.
University research associate Rona Karmela D. Bravo from Institute of Chemistry (IC) was awarded a 2013 BPI-DOST Science Award for her work on bioactive peptides in pigeon peas. Two other UPLB students, Fernando Lit and Ryo Toyoda were also selected to compete in the national level for the Awards. The BPI-DOST Science Awards is a program that gives annual recognition to students who excel as researchers in their special fields of study, namely: physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, biology and chemistry.
Students, faculty, and alumni of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) initiated the celebration of the ICS week by banding together to do a clean-up of the hiking trails of Mt. Tagapo on January 26, 2013 at Talim Island in Binangonan, Rizal.
