Genetics Society holds Genetics Week

The Genetics Society braved all the odds to hold the annual Genetics Week last November 15-20, 2021 with the theme “Harvesting Genes: Using Modern Genetic Techniques to Improve Plant Cultivation”. Centering on the importance of crop and agricultural development, the organization looks into using genetics as a tool to resolve global issues that serve as a threat to food security. People from different walks of life were invited to participate in the events via online platforms like Zoom and Artsteps and social networking sites such as Facebook. These methods provided means to establish networks in the spirit of friendly competition and collaboration.

With the aim to inform, educational materials were exhibited during the event which aimed to introduce the concepts in molecular techniques such as basic DNA cloning, marker assisted selection, and genetic engineering, among others. The attendees were also challenged to answer trivia questions that entail prizes to be claimed via raffle draw of the correct entries. These materials were also geared towards public correction of common misconceptions surrounding controversial and sensitive topics such as genome editing and the consumption and market-availability of GMOs. The recent release of the 2021 edition for Genews was also a celebrated highlight during the event. The official publication held true to its intent to update not just the UPLB community regarding the recent advancements in the field of genetics alongside featuring national current events and issues.

Competitions were held to stimulate the intellect and creativity of the participants during the week-long event. An art contest was held where the best artworks reflecting the theme of the event were selected and awarded with cash prizes on top of the recognition and exhibition of the winning artworks. The event also catered to resident members to foster and stimulate the spirit of camaraderie through a treasure hunt which was enjoyed by both officers and members, alike.

The five-day event concluded successfully with the primary objectives to educate the public with the newest trends in agricultural development alongside the establishment of academic relationships and linkages among the attendees and the organizers alike. The organization looks forward to upholding the 35-year tradition next year.
