Every year, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the biggest college in University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB), awards one individual from each of the sectors in its community (students, faculty, and staff) for exemplary performance and dedication. The award for “most outstanding” faculty members is given to one junior faculty member, and one senior.
The candidates for the award were nominated by their own units or departments, and a citation or description is written for each individual.
The selection is a rigorous process guided by carefully selected standards, and the awardees were chosen by notable staff and faculty who have established themselves in their respective fields.
The annual award is also given to inspire students, staff, and faculty members to excel academically, achieve and even surpass set targets, and develop a sense of responsibility not only to the university but also to the society.
Below are the awardees for this year and corresponding profiles.
Dr. Editha Carreon-Jose – Most Outstanding CAS Senior Faculty Award
Dr. Editha Carreon Jose has been serving the university as a faculty member in the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP) for 15 years now. She has taught about 20 courses – almost all service, major, and graduate offerings in mathematical analysis. She has contributed well to the improvement of the curricula by helping craft course and program proposals, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Prof. Kevin C. Salamañez – Most Outstanding CAS Junior Faculty Award
In this eight years of unfailing commitment to quality teaching, Prof. Kevin C. Salamañez has taught 10 undergraduate courses in general, analytical, environmental and biochemistry, and contributed to the revisions of general and organic chemistry course manuals. Since 2015, he has already mentored six undergraduate thesis students.
Mr. Paul Jhon Diezon – Most Outstanding CAS Student Award
He entered UP aspiring to be a doctor someday, but after taking some time as a student tutor at the Office of Student Affairs, he found a new path. He wants to be a teacher in a public or state university or in poor communities where there is scarcity of teachers. In the future, he wants to pursue a degree in molecular medicine and hopes to come back to Cagayan where he wants to render service.
Ms. Digna Felismino – Most Outstanding Administrative Personnel
This year’s awardee for the 2016 CAS Outstanding Administrative Personnel is Ms. Digna Deseo Felismino, administrative officer at the CAS Office of the College Secretary (OCS). She started as a Research Aide of the STUDI (Science Teaching Using Distance Instruction) Program of UPLB in 1988, and has been handling multifarious jobs as an administrative officer since then.
