The College of Sciences and the Humanities was established by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 58 designating University of the Philippines Los Baños as UP’s first autonomous university on November 20, 1972, and of the UP Board of Regents resolution adopted on December 21, 1972. Its constituent units included Departments of Botany; Chemistry; Humanities; Mathematics and Physics; Life Sciences; Social Sciences; Statistics; and Zoology. There were 154 original faculty members. The board appointed Dr. Edelwina C. Legaspi as the first dean with Dr. Dolores A. Ramirez, who is now a national scientist, as the first college secretary. The College was later renamed as College of Arts and Sciences on October 28, 1977.
