The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) which was established in 1909, has ten colleges and has a tripartite function of instruction, research and extension. Among the ten colleges of UPLB, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is deemed as the center of education in the basic and social sciences, humanities, liberal arts and foundation courses. At present, the CAS is composed of nine units: Institute of Biological Sciences (IBS), Institute of Chemistry (IC), Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP), Institute of Computer Science (ICS), Institute of Statistics(INSTAT), Department of Humanities (DHUM), Department of Social Sciences (DSS), Department of Human Kinetics (DHK) and UP Rural High School (UPRHS).

In line with the university’s extension function, the CAS conducts various extension activities ranging from training programs, technical assistance and laboratory services, consultancy services, experts services and special skills, cultural performances and special events, The basic and specialized training programs which constitute the bulk of extension activities regularly offered by the College, are designed to increase livelihood know-how, boost teaching and research capability and improve managerial skills of the intended clientele. These programs are conducted every summer or any month of the year depending upon the request of a sponsoring organization.
