The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) participated in the 3rd University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) last August 1-7, 2012 in Bali, Indonesia. There were three delegates from the university – Alvin Franz Faminial, Krissah Marga Taganas, both part of the CAS Student Council, and Rochelle Alcasid.
Organized by the United Kingdom’s Humanitarian Affairs, the symposium is an international leadership and humanitarian conference of outstanding youth leaders from all over the world. More than 400 young leaders tackled key humanitarian issues relevant to the global community. They also learned from various inspiring guest speakers including Arthur Gillette, retired UNESCO director, and Robin Lim, CNN’s 2011 Hero of the Year. Other notable activities in the event are the plenary sessions and the Learning Journey.
After the symposium, the delegates are expected to participate in volunteer works and continue their service to their community.
The Philippines will host next year’s USLS.
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) held a one-day seminar for select college administrators last September 24. Led by CAS Dean Zita VJ. Albacea, the seminar aimed to improve the processing of official documents for better delivery of services and performance of mandates.
A sports tournament with the theme “One Day League was successfully held last September 10. The event aimed to promote fitness and total wellness of the faculty, staff, representatives and students of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).
Different CAS units competed in a variety of sports activities. The good teamwork by DHK and ICS (red team) allowed them to win 1st place in running. The IC and IMSP (white team) took home the trophy for men’s basketball. The DSS, UPRHS and INSTAT (green team) bagged the mixed volleyball championship. In badminton, the white team won in the men’s division, and the red team for women’s division.
