Two UP Rural High School students were given the “Award for Extraordinary Effort” for their researches on November 1, 2012 at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Rainier Lomboy and Hannah Luisa Awitan were honored for their researches entitled “Carabao (Bubalus bubalis) Manure as an Alternative Component in Construction-Grade Mud Bricks” and “Growth Rate Performance of Broiler Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) Supplemented with Neem (Azadirachta indica), Ampalaya (Momotdica charantia) and Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Extracts in Drinking Water”, respectively. 
Ten Ruralite students were also sent to Seta Norin High School (SNHS), in Gunma, Japan to learn traditional Japanese calligraphy and  cocoon making, and were invited to attend mathematics, English, and biotechnology classes. Each student was also integrated into a Japanese foster family to immerse themselves in Japanese culture. The integration lasted from October 28 to November 1, 2012.
